Short Deck Hold'em is a poker variant played with a 36-card deck — all cards below 6 removed — which shifts hand rankings, increases the frequency of straights and flushes, and changes preflop odds significantly compared to standard Texas Hold'em.

RULES AND MECHANICS

How Short Deck Hold'em Actually Works

Pull out every 2, 3, 4 and 5 from a standard deck and you have Short Deck Hold'em. The 36 remaining cards run from 6 up to Ace, and that one change ripples through every part of the game — from how often you flop a set to which hand beats which at showdown.

The deal follows the same sequence as Texas Hold'em: each player receives two hole cards, then community cards come out across the flop (three cards), turn (one) and river (one). Betting happens between each street. The key structural difference is the ante system. Instead of posting a small and big blind, every active player posts an equal ante before the cards are dealt.

The player on the dealer button also posts an extra ante — double — which makes the button position genuinely powerful. Hand rankings shift in one critical spot. Because flushes are harder to make than full houses in a 36-card deck, the flush ranks above the full house. Straights are the easiest premium hand to hit, so they stay below three-of-a-kind in the ranking order.

An ace can complete the lowest straight — A-6-7-8-9 — acting as a low card, which is the only time an ace plays below a 6.

How Short Deck Hold'em Actually Works
How Short Deck Hold'em Actually Works
Deck Composition
The deck contains exactly 36 cards: 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, J, Q, K and A across all four suits. No 2s, 3s, 4s or 5s are used at any point in the hand.
Revised Hand Rankings
Flush outranks full house because flushes are statistically rarer in 36 cards. Three-of-a-kind ranks above a straight for the same probability reason — straights become common in a short deck.
Ante-Only Betting Structure
All players post an equal ante; there is no small blind or big blind. The dealer button player posts a double ante, giving them last-action advantage and making positional play even more decisive than in standard Hold'em.
Ace as Low Card
An ace can complete a straight using A-6-7-8-9, where it acts as the card below 6. This is the only low-card role for the ace; in all other combinations it remains the highest card.

DECISIONS AND STRATEGY

Choices That Change Your Short Deck Result

Short Deck Hold'em rewards players who understand which decisions are theirs and which are automatic. Posting the ante is automatic — it happens before you see your cards. Everything after that is a choice. Preflop, you decide whether to call, raise or fold based on your two hole cards and your position relative to the double-ante button.

Because the deck is smaller, hand equity runs closer together preflop — big pairs are still strong, but the gap between them and suited connectors narrows noticeably compared to full-deck Hold'em.

Preflop Starting Hands
High pocket pairs and high suited connectors both gain value in a short deck. Suited connectors hit straights and flushes at a higher rate, narrowing the equity edge that big pairs normally hold.
Position and the Button Ante
The button player acting last has the strongest positional advantage in Short Deck. Defending or stealing against the double-ante button is a core strategic decision on every hand.
Post-Flop Draw Odds
Open-ended straight draws are much stronger here — nine outs in a short deck translate to roughly a 40% chance to complete by the river, higher than the equivalent draw in a 52-card game.
Showdown Hand Reading
Always confirm the hand ranking order before playing live. Misreading a flush as weaker than a full house is a costly mistake specific to Short Deck; the revised ranking is a rule, not optional.

GAME STATS SNAPSHOT

Short Deck Holdem: Key Game Facts

Short Deck Holdem plays with a 36-card deck after the 2s through 5s are removed. That smaller deck changes hand frequencies significantly — straights and flushes come in more often than in standard Texas Holdem, so most table versions rank a flush above a full house.

House edge varies by ante structure and whether a bonus side-bet is in play, but base-game edges typically run between 2% and 3.5% at stakes available in WG8's table lobby. The game runs on desktop and on mobile through your browser, with no app download needed.

GAME TERMS EXPLAINED

Short Deck Holdem Glossary

Short Deck Holdem has its own vocabulary that differs from standard Texas Holdem. The stripped deck changes card ranks, hand values and odds — so knowing these terms before you sit down makes your decisions sharper and your session more focused.

What is a stripped deck in Short Deck Holdem?
A stripped deck is the 36-card deck used in Short Deck Holdem after all twos, threes, fours and fives are removed. It changes every drawing probability in the game.Example: With a stripped deck, hitting a straight draw is roughly twice as likely as in a standard 52-card game.
Why does a flush beat a full house in Short Deck Holdem?
Fewer suited cards remain after stripping, so making a flush is statistically harder than making a full house. Hand rankings are adjusted to reflect actual frequency — rarer hands rank higher.Example: A player holding ace-king of spades on a two-spade board is in a stronger position than in standard Holdem.
What does 'wheel straight' mean in Short Deck Holdem?
In Short Deck Holdem the wheel straight is A-6-7-8-9, since twos through fives are removed. The ace still plays low, but it connects to six rather than two.Example: Holding ace-six on a 7-8-9 board gives you the nut low straight in Short Deck Holdem.
What is ante-only betting in Short Deck Holdem?
Many Short Deck Holdem tables use a rotating button ante instead of posted blinds. Every player at the table pays the ante each hand, and the button player may pay a larger ante.Example: At a 100 Taka ante table, all six players post before cards are dealt, with the button posting 200 Taka.
What does 'nut hand' mean in this format?
The nut hand is the strongest possible holding given the community cards. In Short Deck Holdem, the nut hand often differs from standard Holdem because flush ranks above full house.Example: On a board of K-K-9-7-2 of mixed suits, trip kings is the nut full house but an ace-high flush still outranks it.
What is RTP in table game context?
RTP (Return to Player) is the theoretical percentage of wagered amounts a game returns over time. In Short Deck Holdem it depends on the paytable, side bets and optimal strategy applied.Example: A Short Deck Holdem variant with a 97.5% RTP returns roughly 97.5 Taka for every 100 Taka wagered at optimal play.

PLAYER QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Short Deck Holdem — Common Questions

Got questions about how Short Deck Holdem actually plays on WG8? These are the things players ask most often — from hand rankings to betting rules, side bets and strategy differences versus standard Holdem. Read through before your first hand.

How many cards are in the Short Deck Holdem deck and does it change the odds a lot?

Yes — significantly. The 36-card deck removes 16 cards, tightening the gaps between hand frequencies. Sets, straights and flushes all come in more often, so pot odds and drawing decisions change completely.

Can I use the same strategy I use in Texas Holdem?

Not directly. Starting hand values shift: suited connectors and pairs gain value, while high-card-only hands lose relative strength. You also need to re-learn which hands beat which because the ranking order changes.

Is the ante structure the same at every Short Deck Holdem table on WG8?

Table structures vary by game variant. Some use a button ante only, others use a uniform ante from all players. Check the table info panel before sitting — stake sizes and ante rules are shown there.

Are there side bets available in Short Deck Holdem?

Some Short Deck Holdem variants include optional side bets on your hole cards or the flop. These pay out at fixed odds for premium hands but carry a higher house edge than the main game.

How do I know if a Short Deck Holdem table is live-dealt or RNG?

Live-dealt tables show a real dealer on video and are labelled 'Live' in the lobby. RNG versions run automatically with an animated interface. Both use the same 36-card deck and hand rankings.

What is the best starting hand in Short Deck Holdem?

Pocket aces remain the top starting hand, but suited connectors like 9-T and J-Q rise sharply in value. The removed low cards mean straight draws using mid-range connected cards complete more frequently.
